Property Type: Single Family

Description: This gorgeous landmark is known as the Oliver House and as the House of Seven Gables by the locals. This one of a kind unique structure, with nearly 5, 000 square feet, will intrigue you. The original section of the home is thought to date to the late 1600's. Various additions were added in the Gothic Revival era of the early 1800's. A local prominent family known as the Oliver's created the present day masterpiece and it's thought that the seven gables represented the seven kids they had. The local area known as Marbletown was so named from the abundance of Limestone found in the area and was settled as early as 1638. By 1672 it held 53 homes and by 1870 the population was over 4, 000. The Esopus and Rondout Creeks flow thru this area and the fertile farm land along the streams was once roamed by the Esopus Native Americans who were a branch of the Lenape tribe. Route 209 was once a well worn Native American trail and is one of the oldest transportation routes in the country. The English took this area from the Dutch and those original settlers were thought to be English soldiers turned farmers. Marbletown was considered the state capital for a brief period after the British burned Kingston. Today it's home to lush farmland and still dotted with beautiful old stone homes like this one. The present stone house structure has stood thru it all and if those old walls could talk we'd hear quite a tale. Standing strong and proud and surrounded by the well known Farm Hub this old beauty is looking for it's next caretaker after 50 years in the same family. Spend some time and take it all in. Gorgeous stone and wood work thru out. Huge chestnut beams and white oak boards support the structure. The exterior is all local milled limestone and the seven gables are quite pleasing to the eye. Marble fireplaces once provided the heat here. The present day main floor wraps around the original late 1600's section and contains a beautiful kitchen with a full bath off of it. There is also a formal dining room, parlor room, bar room and a half bath. It's best thought of as a center hall Colonial I'd say and a wide stair case takes you to the second floor where you'll find four large bedrooms, a full bath and an area perfect to be an office. Large walk in closets in the bedrooms are unheard of in this vintage as are the high ceilings throughout the home. The attic is massive and offers a way out to the widows walk. One oil fired furnace provides forced hot air heat for the main floor and a second in the attic fueled by propane provides forced hot air and a/c for the second floor.
Present family have done so much to this place in the last few years. The list includes two new furnaces, new oil tank, new propane tank, new septic tank and leach field, new on demand water heater, new rubber roof, new metal roof on work shop, three newly remodeled bathrooms, blown in insulation, exterior has been re-pointed and the front porch completely restored and repaired. New concrete footings, decking, roofing, you name it. Outside stair case was rebuilt. Interior rooms have received total make overs as well. Just enough work is left to allow you to make it yours. The original section from the 1600's could be a great in-law suite or even Airbnb rental. It consists of one open room on the main level and two smaller rooms on the second level. The work shop building next to the house is also thought to date to the late 1600's. There is a very old chicken coop like structure as well. The NYS Thruway is only 5 miles away and one can be in Kingston, Stone Ridge or Woodstock in no time. Across the street is all protected farm land. That land, part of the Farm Hub, envelopes this property as well.
